The environmental impact of custom jewelry
Share
You may have noticed that custom jewelry is becoming more and more popular lately. At Crëazy Fashion, we manufacture unique and personalized jewelry in Yaoundé. But have you ever thought about the environmental impact of this type of production?
Extraction of raw materials
Jewelry manufacturing requires the use of precious metals such as gold, silver, or platinum. However, extracting these raw materials has a high environmental cost. Open-pit mines destroy landscapes, pollute soil and water, and disrupt local ecosystems. In addition, these activities consume a lot of energy and water.
The manufacturing process
Once the raw materials have been extracted, comes the transformation stage. At Crëazy Fashion, we use metalworking techniques such as casting, hammering or welding. Each of these steps requires energy, often from non-renewable sources such as coal or natural gas. Not to mention the waste and polluting emissions generated by these processes.
The carbon footprint of transport
Finally, we must not forget the impact of transportation. Our custom jewelry is shipped all over the world, which generates significant greenhouse gas emissions. This is true whether it is to transport the raw materials to our workshop or to deliver the orders to our customers.
What can be done to reduce the impact?
So how can we reduce the ecological footprint of custom jewelry? Here are some avenues to explore:
- Favor recycled or sustainably sourced materials, such as ethical gold or lab-grown diamonds
- Optimizing manufacturing processes to consume less energy and produce less waste
- Choosing greener modes of transport, such as rail or sea freight
- Offsetting unavoidable CO2 emissions, for example by financing reforestation projects
At Crëazy Fashion, we are aware of these environmental issues and we do everything we can to reduce our impact. Because fashion must also be sustainable!
